Bringing the Pakistani Tradition Into Your Modern American Home

By Anila Hasnain

Hey friends,

Today, I am thinking about home decor!

If you’re anything like me, you would definitely love the idea of giving your space a little refresh—something that feels personal and exciting.

To be honest—there’s something so special about adding a little bit of cultural flair to your home that instantly makes it feel more personal and vivacious.

And guess what?

Because I am a Pakistani, I cannot deny that fact that mixing traditional Pakistani decor into your modern American home is the perfect way to add that unique touch that’s both vibrant and full of history.

Whether you are a Pakistani-American (like me!) longing for some desi vibes in your all-American home or someone who just adores those gorgeous, handcrafted artifacts from the region, I’ve got some fab ideas to help you combine the two worlds and pop up your decor with some “up and loud” south Asian extravaganza.

So grab a cup of chai (or coffee, no judgment), and let’s jump into the cultural bail gaari, (bandwagon!).

Color Your World Bold!

Decor always starts with color.

Pakistani interiors are known for being anything but shy.

We’re talking deep reds, bold yellows, earthy greens, and royal blues. You don’t need to repaint your whole house. Just adding these rich colors in small doses can make your space feel super warm and inviting.

How you can do that?

• Ajrak Prints: These traditional block prints are from the southern province of Sindh. They come in red, black, and indigo and are bold and beautiful.

Think: cushions or throws with these prints.

• Ralli Quilts: These are hand-stitched quilts made from recycled fabric in bright, playful patterns. It’s like your grandma’s patchwork.

They can perfect for a cozy bedspread or a statement piece in your living room.

• Multani Tilework: Want something extra?

Try adding a splash of intricate blue and green tiles to a backsplash or bathroom.

Embroidery, Rugs & More

Pakistani artisans are gurus of intricate craftsmanship.

From embroidery to woodwork, you can find so many ways to integrate these handmade wonders into your home.

Here are some great options:

• Phulkari Embroidery:

This is bright floral hand embroidery from Punjab. It is a perfect addition to any throw pillows or wall hangings.

• Bokhara Rugs:

These hand-knotted beauties come from rural Pakistan and are known for their bold geometric patterns. A stunning area rug can anchor any room.

• Sindhi Mirror Work:

A little sparkle never hurt anyone, right?

Sindhi embroidery features tiny mirrors sewn into the fabric.

Think: cushion covers or wall art with a bit of bling.

• Wooden Furniture:

And let’s not forget the carved wooden furniture that’s a staple in Pakistani homes.

Carved Tables from Swat or Kashmir are not only functional but are conversation pieces on their own.

Jharokas: Intricately carved wooden window frames can be hung as mirrors and wall art, adding old-world charm to a modern room.

Art That Tells a Story

Can we talk about how amusing Pakistani art is?

You’ve probably seen the famous truck art—vivid, playful paintings covering the sides of trucks across Pakistan.

But why should trucks have all the fun? You can totally bring this into your home too!

• Truck Art:

Turn those bold, colorful designs into wall hangings or even trays for a quirky, fun touch.

• Calligraphy Art:

For something more elegant, Islamic calligraphy, often featuring Quranic verses or poetry in Urdu script, can add a beautiful, spiritual vibe to any space.

• Miniature Paintings:

These delicate artworks depicting historical or nature scenes can give your space a timeless, artistic touch.

Hang a piece of truck art in your entryway or a few miniature paintings above your couch.

Trust me, these will definitely get your guests talking.

Copper & Brass with Royal Mughal Vibes

Let’s talk about some royal sheen!

Copper and brass have long been staples in traditional Pakistani homes, and these materials totally give off a vibe that’s both warm and sophisticated.

And you know what’s even cooler?

These metals have some serious Mughal royalty vibes.

Yep, back in the day, Mughal kings and emperors decked out their palaces with intricate brass and copper decor—think ornate trays, goblets, and lanterns.

So, adding a few of these pieces to your home isn’t just a decor choice, it’s like channeling your inner queen or king!!!!!

• Brass Serving Trays:

Imagine serving your friends snacks on a brass tray—totally casual but also, low-key royal, right?

It’s functional, but also a statement piece that says, “I’ve got taste.”

• Copper Vases:

These work beautifully as a chic vase for flowers or even just as a decorative piece on its own.

Plus, the patina that copper develops over time? So dreamy. It’s like your home’s getting its own vintage glow-up.

• Mughal-Inspired Lanterns:

Bring in some soft, ambient lighting with brass or copper lanterns. And suddenly, feel the wow! Your living room becomes like a Mughal palace or garden.

You can just imagine them hanging in the corners of a royal courtyard.

Low Seating & Fusion Furniture

Who says your home has to stick to one style?

One of the amazing things about Pakistani homes is the low seating arrangements—like charpais (woven daybeds) and gaddis (floor cushions).

Even if you are all about that modern aesthetic, you can still bring a bit of this laid-back, communal vibe into your space.

• Charpai:

These woven daybeds are great for outdoor patios or even as extra seating inside.

• Gaddis:

Add a couple of large, floor cushions to create a cozy corner for lounging or reading.

• Dewaan:

This is a low, cushioned seating arrangement— like a planked straight bed. Famous for its presence in royal courts and emperors sitting areas, it creates a relaxed atmosphere for lounging with friends and family.

Handcrafted Pottery

Last but certainly not least—let’s talk pottery.

Pakistani pottery is stunning, and pieces from areas like Multan and Hala are famous for their intricate designs and beautiful blue hues.

• Multani Blue Pottery:

These ceramic pieces with floral and geometric designs can be used as vases, decorative bowls, or even wall plates.

• Terracotta Pots:

Handmade clay pots are perfect for your indoor plants or just as decor on their own.

Let the Drums Roll!

That’s it, my friends!

Whether you are already familiar with the desi Pakistani culture or just dipping your toes into this intricate art world, these small touches can bring a unique and soulful vibe to your home.

You don't need to overhaul your whole space. Just start with a few accents here and there.

It’s all about finding the right harmony between your personal style and the small Pakistani pieces that bring that amazing part of the world here to you!
